The tutors at the Dominican Literacy Center volunteer their time and support in helping women learn to read, write, and speak English.

The women who volunteer as tutors at the center do not need special teaching backgrounds to help women learn to read, write, and speak English. The requirements are simple: a willingness to help; patience and understanding; and commitment to helping another person learn. Volunteers need not speak Spanish.

The Center will match a student and a tutor based on availability and time preferences.

Before a tutor is introduced to her student, the tutor participates in 16 hours of tutor training.
A tutor is also required to do several hours of outside reading. All tutor-training is done on site, at the Dominican Literary Center, and all tutors must be trained before beginning tutoring.

Tutors and students meet weekly at the Dominican Literacy Center from September to June. Weekly tutoring sessions are 1 1/2 hours long. The sessions are scheduled throughout the day and evening, according to the needs of the student and tutor:

  • 5 mornings each week
  • 4 afternoons each week
  • 3 evenings each week
